Hey everybody,
I told folks I would try to get back to writing on Substack, whenever I had the time to cover big city money stuff. While I will try to get out larger pieces around the ACFR and annual budget, I can’t even guarantee that. The new website I’m managing is doing well and eating up a ton of my non-work time. I really have no prior experience running a website, so I honestly didn’t understand the amount of time that would have to go to the site administration. I admittedly didn’t know what I was signing up for, but it’s going good. It just doesn’t leave me time to write over here.
While the site is not the ultra-nerdery that my Substack tends to be, we do cover a lot of the same topics. Just a sample of what you can find on the site:
A series of OpEds from all three Comptroller candidates, which ran as part of a weeklong series on the race.
Coverage of the mayoral race’s campaign financing.
A lively discussion of who to improve bicycle infrastructure and cyclist safety in the city.
Coverage of the 3rd ward aldermanic race.
Theater coverage from former RFT reviewer Tina Farmer
Local music writing
Coverage of local left wing organizations, something that has largely disappeared from the local media landscape.
The city’s adrift Civil Rights Enforcement Agency
We usually post between three and six stories per week, and we have been expanding the number of site contributors. As a result, site traffic is growing and more folks are emailing in their story ideas. All of this means that running the site takes quite a bit of time. At the same time, the site is non-commercial and all-volunteer. Please keep in mind that I am still a full time social worker. When you add all that up, it means that the time on the weekends or evenings that I used to be able to dedicate to writing is now being used to keep the site rolling.
If you’re missing my writing, check in over there. I usually post a story or two per week.
